A comment from one of the musicians in 2008

"I'd also just like to add that this was the most enjoyable course I have ever done. The repertoire was fantastic and the coaching was really first rate. But above all there was a really supportive and warm atmosphere amongst the students and from the staff. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and am so grateful that I was given the financial aid to be able to attend."

About the festival

The Charterhouse International Music Festival offers young players a unique opportunity to discuss and explore solo and chamber music repertoire with celebrated tutors and performers, bringing together wind and string players, pianists and harpists. A library of chamber music is on site. There are daily master classes and chamber music coaching sessions with different tutors during the week. Works are performed every day in informal lunch time and evening concerts. Lunch time concerts are for free choice of repertoire. The evening concerts are more structured and are open to the public. There are four resident pianists who are allocated to specific instruments.

Scholarships

There are a limited number of scholarships available. Applications should be made in writing to the email address: enquiries@cimf.org.uk. These will be judged individually on merit and on a first come, first served basis.

Location

Situated 3 miles from the town of Guildford, Charterhouse is set in 240 acres in the heart of the Surrey countryside. The original school was founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611 on the site of the Carthusian monastery near Smithfield, London. The School moved to the current site in 1872 and is built in local Bargate stone.
The Chapel built in 1927, was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and is the largest war memorial in England. More recent developments such as the new Boarding Houses, the Ben Travers Theatre and the Ralph Vaughan Williams Music Centre are a modern contrast to the Victorian Gothic of the old School.
